WhatsApp rolls out browser calling, HD video features
WhatsApp has unveiled a range of new calling capabilities aimed at making communication more flexible and convenient across multiple devices, as the Meta-owned platform continues to expand beyond instant messaging.
The latest update introduces browser-based voice and video calls, seamless call transfers between devices, a waiting room for group calls, quicker high-definition video connections and enhanced noise suppression. Together, the features are designed to improve the experience for both personal and professional users.
With the update, users can now place and receive one-on-one or group audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to install the desktop application. The feature is expected to benefit people using shared computers, office-managed laptops with software restrictions, or those who simply prefer working from a web browser.
According to WhatsApp, browser-based calling retains many of the platform’s familiar features, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, the dedicated Calls tab, call history and favourite contacts. All calls made through the browser will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring conversations remain private without additional charges or time restrictions.
To support users who frequently switch between devices during the day, WhatsApp has also introduced Call Transfer, enabling participants to move an ongoing group call from one device to another without ending the conversation.
The feature allows users who begin a call on their smartphones to continue it seamlessly on WhatsApp Web or the desktop version, providing a smoother experience when working on larger screens at home or in the office.
The company has also strengthened meeting management with the introduction of a Waiting Room feature. When hosts create a call link and activate the “Require approval to join” option, participants must receive approval before entering the call.
The new control is expected to enhance security for business meetings, online classrooms and community discussions by giving organisers greater control over who joins a conversation.
WhatsApp has equally improved video quality with the introduction of QuickHD, a feature that significantly reduces the time required for high-definition video to stabilise after a call begins. This delivers a clearer and more professional video experience almost immediately after connection.
To improve voice clarity in noisy environments, the platform has launched Noise Suppression, which filters out background sounds from locations such as airports, cafés, busy streets and open-plan offices. Users can activate or adjust the feature at any time through the in-call settings menu.
The latest additions underscore WhatsApp’s ongoing transformation into a comprehensive communications platform capable of supporting business collaboration, remote work, education and everyday conversations.
By combining browser-based calling, seamless cross-device continuity, stronger meeting controls and improved audio and video performance, WhatsApp is strengthening its position as an all-in-one communications platform for users seeking secure, reliable and accessible connectivity.
The new features are being introduced gradually and will become available to users globally over the coming weeks.
