Turkish Airlines addresses airport protests in Lagos, Abuja
...Warns of possible flight cancellations
Turkish Airlines has expressed concern over recent protest actions that disrupted its operations at airports in Lagos and Abuja, warning that continued disruptions could lead to possible flight cancellations.
The airline, in a statement addressing the situation, acknowledged the right of workers and unions to express their views but described the protests as unfortunate, particularly as discussions are already ongoing with representatives of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE).
According to the carrier, its operations in Nigeria fully comply with the country’s labour laws as well as relevant regulatory requirements. It therefore urged all stakeholders to address concerns through established legal and dialogue mechanisms rather than actions capable of disrupting airport operations.
The airline stressed that the safety and security of its passengers, employees and overall operations remain its highest priority.
“As demonstrated in the past, should operational conditions fail to meet the required safety standards, Turkish Airlines will take the necessary operational measures,” the statement said.
The airline also reiterated its willingness to continue engaging with relevant stakeholders in order to reach a constructive and responsible resolution to the dispute.
However, it cautioned that if a secure and stable operating environment cannot be guaranteed, the company may be compelled to reconsider its flight operations.
Turkish Airlines added that under such circumstances, it may explore the option of adjusting or cancelling flights on its Nigerian routes to safeguard passengers, staff and operational integrity.
