MTN, Airtel deepen grip on Nigeria’s telecom space with 85% market share
Nigeria’s telecommunications industry is increasingly tilting in favour of its biggest players, with new figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and first-quarter 2026 financial disclosures highlighting a sharp concentration of subscribers among two operators.
The latest data shows that MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria together command more than 85 percent of the country’s active mobile lines, reinforcing their dominance and widening the gap between them and smaller competitors. The trend is prompting renewed concerns around competitive balance, pricing influence, and the future shape of the nation’s telecom ecosystem.
As of March 2026, MTN Nigeria remains the clear market leader, with a subscriber base of 95.76 million, accounting for more than half of all active lines nationwide. Airtel Nigeria follows with 63.63 million users, solidifying its position as the second-largest operator.

Other players continue to trail significantly behind. Globacom recorded 22.64 million subscribers within the same period, while 9mobile (T2) remained a distant fourth, with just 3.48 million users.
Overall, the sector has continued to expand, with total active subscriptions rising to about 182.2 million in early 2026, up from 169.3 million recorded in January 2025. By March, the figure had climbed further to approximately 185.7 million, underscoring sustained growth in mobile connectivity.
In terms of technology adoption, there is a clear shift toward faster networks. Fourth-generation (4G) services now account for over half of all connections, with a 53.41 percent share, while fifth-generation (5G) usage is gradually gaining traction at 3.94 percent. Meanwhile, reliance on older 2G and 3G networks continues to decline as consumers migrate to higher-speed alternatives.
Despite ongoing economic pressures, telecom operators have maintained strong financial performance. MTN Nigeria, for example, reported service revenue of ₦1.5 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 41.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
