The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has clarified the rationale behind the government’s decision to withdraw a criminal case involving the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc.
In a statement issued by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Publicity, the AGF emphasized that the move to discontinue the case against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, MD/CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc, underscores the office’s dedication to fairness and justice.
“The Attorney General’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi in this matter reflects a commitment to preventing any miscarriage of justice,” the statement read. “After a comprehensive review of the case, it became evident that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director at the time the implicated account was established.”
The AGF further explained that the decision aligns with principles of justice and the rule of law. The statement clarified that while the charges against Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe have been dropped, this does not absolve Fidelity Bank from the allegations outlined in the case, which remains under judicial scrutiny.
The statement urged the public to allow the legal process to proceed without undue speculation or assumptions.
The AGF assured that justice would be upheld at all times, stating that any individuals or entities found culpable would face the full consequences of the law to deter future misconduct.
