GTBank customers can now enjoy a more convenient way to pay for online services locally and internationally following the bank’s introduction of Google Pay support for its debit cards.
The new service allows customers of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited, the flagship banking subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), to link their debit cards to Google Wallet and use Google Pay at supported online checkout points without repeatedly entering their card details.
The development offers customers another payment option as digital transactions become an increasingly important part of everyday activities, from shopping and paying bills to booking flights, reserving hotels and managing subscriptions.
With Google Pay, customers can select the payment option at checkout and confirm their transactions, reducing the steps involved in completing online purchases. The service can also be used for eligible digital services, membership renewals, food orders and other payments accepted through the platform.
For customers who regularly pay for services outside Nigeria, the integration provides access to a digital payment solution accepted across multiple countries and regions, subject to merchant support and applicable card restrictions.
Google Pay incorporates features designed to safeguard payment information during transactions, helping customers make online payments with greater confidence. However, customers should continue to observe basic security practices, including protecting their banking credentials and verifying payment requests before authorising transactions.
Commenting on the launch, GTBank Managing Director, Mrs Miriam Olusanya, said the initiative responds to customers’ growing demand for payment options that combine convenience with security.
“Our customers are increasingly looking for simpler and more secure ways to pay online, both locally and internationally. By enabling customers add their GTBank debit cards to Google Wallet, we are making online payments more convenient and giving them access to a globally recognised digital payment solution. Customers can now complete online payments more seamlessly without repeatedly entering their card details,” she said.
Olusanya added that the initiative aligns with the bank’s broader effort to simplify everyday banking through technology and develop services that reflect customers’ changing digital needs.
“The launch reflects our commitment to removing friction from everyday banking and delivering solutions that fit seamlessly into our customers’ increasingly digital lifestyles. Google Pay offers our customers flexibility when making online payments while supporting a secure and seamless payment experience. As part of the Group, we remain committed to advancing our shared vision of leveraging technology to make end-to-end financial services more accessible and intuitive for everyone,” she said.
The introduction of Google Pay adds to GTBank’s digital payment offerings, giving debit cardholders another way to complete eligible online transactions without manually entering their card information at every checkout.
For customers, the key benefits are convenience, a simplified checkout process and access to an additional digital payment channel for local and international purchases. The service’s availability and acceptance will depend on the merchant, supported payment channels and the applicable terms governing each card.
