Elon Musk’s xAI secures $10 bn to scale AI ambitions, build infrastructure
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has successfully secured $10 billion in new funding to accelerate its infrastructure development and competitive edge in the fast-growing AI space. The funding is evenly split between debt and equity investments.
Leading the transaction, Morgan Stanley on Monday confirmed that xAI completed a $5 billion debt financing round, structured through a mix of secured notes and term loans. According to the bank, the offering was significantly oversubscribed, drawing participation from major institutional investors worldwide.
In parallel, the company also wrapped up a $5 billion strategic equity round. While details on the equity backers remain undisclosed, earlier reports from Bloomberg indicated xAI had been in talks to raise approximately $4.3 billion in equity capital. That effort is part of a broader campaign to amass up to $20 billion in funding — a move that could potentially elevate the company’s valuation beyond $120 billion, with some insiders speculating it could eventually approach $200 billion.
The newly raised capital will support xAI’s aggressive growth plans. A significant portion is earmarked for scaling its computing capabilities through advanced data centers tailored for high-performance AI processing. The funds will also bolster the ongoing development of Grok — xAI’s conversational AI integrated into the X platform (formerly Twitter) — and fuel the design of proprietary AI chips, code-named “Gigafab,” aimed at reducing reliance on Nvidia’s sought-after GPUs.
Musk, who founded xAI in 2023 following his departure from OpenAI, has cast the company as a formidable challenger to not only OpenAI but also major players such as Google DeepMind and Anthropic. xAI’s flagship product, Grok, is positioned as a more edgy, candid chatbot — a contrast to the polished responses typical of other platforms.
The combined funding — one of the largest for a private AI startup in recent memory — comes at a time when industry rivals are forming billion-dollar alliances to secure compute power and chip access. OpenAI, for example, is backed by a $51 billion deal with Microsoft, while Amazon has invested $4 billion in Anthropic.
“The offering was oversubscribed and attracted leading global debt investors,” Morgan Stanley noted in a post on X.
Musk has repeatedly emphasized the need for end-to-end control of data, energy, chips, and distribution in order to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI). With this massive cash injection, xAI now has the capital resources to aggressively pursue that vision.
As of publication, xAI has not released an official statement on the funding round, and requests for comment went unanswered. Nonetheless, the message is clear: Musk is making a high-stakes bet on building a self-sufficient, vertically integrated AI powerhouse — and investors are lining up to back the vision.
