In a bid to strengthen environmental management and promote sustainable practices, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) hosted a one-day training workshop for environmental consultants and industrial facilities at the State Treasury Hall, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja on Wednesday.
The capacity-building event, themed “Climate Fundamentals, Sector Impact, Risk Assessment, and Action Planning,” was designed to update participants on the latest trends and strategies in the environmental field. It also aimed to enhance their effectiveness in implementing LASEPA’s mandate of creating a healthier and more sustainable Lagos.

Speaking at the event, LASEPA’s General Manager, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, emphasized the critical role of environmental consultants as key drivers of compliance and sustainability across industries in the state.
“This programme is targeted at those who act as custodians of environmental standards—consultants who help disseminate our regulations across various sectors,” Ajayi noted. “Since we began this initiative, we’ve observed notable improvements in compliance levels—up to a 25% increase from last year. This tells us the training is working, and that’s why we are committed to continuing it.”
Highlighting the legal role of consultants, Director of Research and Development, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Abdulwarees Solanke noted that the agency is responsible for conducting environmental assessments and ensuring that businesses operate within the bounds of the law.

“This initiative is part of our contribution as regulators to equip consultants and facilities with the tools they need to effectively support environmental compliance. Strengthening their capacity ultimately helps us collect better data and enforce regulations more effectively,” she said.
She added that improved industry compliance would lead to a reduction in harmful emissions, a healthier population, and a more livable environment.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Omowumi Kola-Lawal, a climate change expert and Technical Partner at Climate Synergy, praised LASEPA’s leadership in championing climate awareness.
“LASEPA is setting the pace in environmental protection by helping consultants understand climate change, manage risks, and adopt global best practices,” she said. “With this training, consultants can now better support industries in developing climate action strategies and mitigation policies.”

Professor Kehinde Olayinka, Managing Director of Enville Environmental Consultants, echoed the importance of continuous learning, particularly in understanding climate-related risks and emission control.
“It’s essential for consultants to stay updated through regular workshops and training sessions,” she said. “I would also encourage LASEPA to organize webinars as a way to foster ongoing dialogue and knowledge sharing.”

LASEPA is saddled with the responsibility to build a portfolio of sound environmental management programmes and projects in the development of a sustainable environment in conjunction with other arms of government, regulatory organizations and international agencies
