In a bid to promote better hygiene and support learning among students, the Ikeja Metro Lions Club has donated five units of modern toilet facilities to Ifako-Ijaiye Senior Comprehensive High School, Ijaiye, Lagos. The club also donated educational materials to the students of the school.
The toilet facilities, officially unveiled on Thursday, were described as a much-needed intervention by the Lions International District 404B2 Governor, Lion Tolulope Senbanjo. Speaking during the event, Senbanjo commended District 1, the staff, and the entire student body for their cooperation in making the project a reality. He emphasized the importance of the facilities, noting that they would help students develop better hygiene habits and combat open defecation, a major cause of widespread diseases in the community.

Senbanjo urged the school’s management and students to make proper use of the facilities, stressing that this would encourage the club to continue its philanthropic work. “We want you to make good use of these toilet facilities as this will inspire us to do more for the school,” he said.
He further highlighted the club’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian projects across the district, assuring that the Lions Club would continue to support communities through impactful initiatives.
In his opening remarks, the President of Ikeja Metro Lions Club, Lion Chike Akaeze, reiterated that the donation was driven by the club’s passion for service to humanity. He explained that the modern toilet facility was just one of the many projects the club had executed, and that more interventions were underway across various communities.

Akaeze revealed that additional projects were in the pipeline, expected to be completed before the end of his service year in June. “We are also working on an eye clinic project where we will sponsor eye examinations and donate glasses in Ikeja,” he said. He recalled the club’s past activities, including a cholera awareness campaign in July 2024, a clean water and hygiene awareness drive, the donation of environmental tools to students in the Ikeja zone, a childhood cancer awareness program, a diabetes awareness campaign, and the sponsorship of cataract surgeries alongside the distribution of eyeglasses.
Representative of the Tutor General, Adeoye Adebowale, Maria Ojo, Director of School Administration; and the Principal of Ifako-Ijaiye Senior Comprehensive High School, Babalola Elizabeth, all expressed gratitude to the Ikeja Metro Lions Club. They commended the club’s generous contributions to the school and the broader community, acknowledging that the Lions’ efforts were helping to support the Lagos State Government’s developmental agenda.

The Senior Prefect of the school, Ojueniola Christiana, also expressed her appreciation, describing the new toilet facilities as a valuable addition that would help students maintain personal hygiene and keep the school environment clean. “This is a good project that will enable students to defecate properly and promote neatness in the school,” she said.
The event also served as a reminder of the Lions Club’s long-standing presence in Nigeria. Lionism was introduced to the country in 1963 through the efforts of Lion Rene Louiseau, leading to the chartering of the Lagos Lions Club—now known as the Lagos Doyen Lions Club—on December 21, 1964. From its humble beginnings with 24 members, the Lions Club has grown to over 9,600 members in 400 clubs across Nigeria.
