According to the report, Nigeria’s music ecosystem is experiencing remarkable growth, driven by both strong domestic support and increasing international recognition. Earnings by Nigerian artists on Spotify have surged by over 140 percent in the last two years, reflecting the expanding global appetite for the country’s sound.
Engagement levels on the platform also recorded impressive milestones. Nigerian artists collectively achieved more than 30 billion streams in 2025, with listeners spending approximately 1.6 billion hours consuming their music. Additionally, new audiences discovered Nigerian songs over 1.3 billion times during the year, marking a notable rise from 2024 figures.

On the home front, local content continues to dominate listening preferences. Nigerian acts accounted for more than 80 percent of songs featured on Spotify Nigeria’s Daily Top 50 chart in 2025, underscoring the strong influence of homegrown talent. Consumption of Nigerian music within the country also rose sharply, recording a 170 percent year-on-year increase.

Commenting on the development, Spotify’s Managing Director for Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, highlighted the growing impact of Nigerian music both locally and globally. She noted that the country’s creative output continues to shape global culture while offering artists new pathways to build sustainable careers.

The report further points to significant growth across different segments of the industry. Streams of Nigerian female artists climbed by 55 percent compared to the previous year, while independent artists saw a 75 percent increase in streams. Notably, independent musicians and labels accounted for about 58 percent of total royalties earned, reflecting their expanding influence within the ecosystem.

Spotify also played a key role in boosting visibility for Nigerian talent through its editorial platforms. Nearly 2,000 Nigerian artists were featured on curated playlists in 2025. Globally, Nigerian music gained traction with appearances in hundreds of millions of user-generated playlists, while millions of playlists were created locally.
Beyond commercial success, the data highlights an evolving and diverse listening culture in Nigeria. Over the past five years, genres such as alternative pop, drill, emo, anime-inspired sounds, and pop urbaine have recorded significant growth, pointing to a dynamic and increasingly experimental music scene.

Overall, Spotify’s latest report paints a picture of an industry on the rise, where Nigerian artists are not only strengthening their presence at home but also expanding their reach worldwide while generating substantial economic returns.
