Springwell Development Initiative, Yiaga Africa, NED organize sensitization programme on voter registration

Springwell Development Initiative, in collaboration with Yiaga Africa and with funding from the National Endowment for Democracy, hosted a sensitization programme on Saturday for residents of the Ikeja Local Government Area. This event aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing nationwide voter registration for Nigerians aged 18 and older.
The programme, which will also be held in Ojoo, Yaba, and Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Areas, was designed to inform the community about the importance of registering for their Permanent Voter Card (PVC).
After the event, Adewuni Oluwaremilekun, the secretary of the Springwell Development Initiative, shared that the goal of the NGOs involved was to educate residents on the significance of obtaining their PVC and to encourage them to engage in their civic duties.

Adewumi shared, “The main goal of this sensitization program is to inform our community and encourage them to register for the Permanent Voter Card. Some folks we chatted with this morning mentioned they weren’t aware of the importance of the PVC, while others said they either didn’t have one or had misplaced theirs. After our conversation, a few of them promised to head to the registration centers and sign up. We also reached out to some young people aged 18 and over to explain why it’s crucial for them to register for their PVC.”
Michael Ogunsola, the Lagos State Vocal Person for YIAGA Africa, added, “This is a call for everyone to make an impact. It’s not just about getting your voter card and sitting on the fence; it’s about actively participating in governance. What we did today is just the beginning—we’ll be doing this in other local government areas across the state. We’re also engaging with key stakeholders like traditional rulers, religious leaders, market women, and artisans to advocate for the importance of obtaining their PVC and participating in elections.”
“Moreover, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is fully on board with this awareness initiative. It’s a collective effort to ensure that everyone gets their voter card and fulfills their constitutional duty.”
Ogunsola explained that collaborating with local government authorities is essential to achieving their goal of informing the public, as they are using their domains as hubs for the programme.
He encouraged the public, especially those aged 18 and older, to obtain their voter cards and take charge of their future by fulfilling their civic responsibilities. Adewumi also urged Nigerians to view this as a moral obligation, reminding those without PVC that their card represents their power.
