World Sight Day 2024: Lions Club brings eye care awareness to Lagos

In celebration of World Sight Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness of blindness and the importance of eye care, the Sight & Vision Project of the Lions Club (Lagos axis) launched with much fanfare on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The event began with an awareness walk from Pen Cinema Under Bridge to the Agege Local Government Secretariat, where the community joined the Lions Club in its efforts to promote eye health.

The District Governor, Ln. (Dr.) Ibrahim ‘Jide Bello, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the Agege Local Government, which helped make the event a success. He also extended his thanks to the Sight Committee, led by Ln. Babalola Kabiawu, for their dedication and hard work in organizing the event.

The well-attended program offered free diabetes and eye screenings to local residents. More than 200 people benefited from the initiative, receiving glasses and medications to improve their vision and manage eye-related conditions.

As the Lions Club continues its mission as “knights of the blind,” this year’s event emphasized the importance of regular eye checkups and diabetes management in preventing blindness. The initiative aims to spread awareness and provide vital eye care services to the community.

World Sight Day, observed on the second Thursday of October, reminds the world of the significance of eye health and the importance of accessible care for all. This year’s theme echoes the Lions Club’s ongoing commitment to combating blindness and empowering individuals with better vision.

Recalled that Lion ‘Jide Bello emphasized the club’s plan to distribute 3,000 eyeglasses to individuals with vision impairments. “Clear vision is essential for a better quality of life. We will focus on distributing eyeglasses across our district to those who cannot afford them, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to see the world. Our target is to build on last year’s efforts with an additional 3,000 eyeglasses,” he said.
